Stories in Light – Brazil.
Episode 15: Bianca

Long before she learned to read,
she learned
to read the river.

Bianca (11) grows up deep in the Pantanal,

where the river is the road
and nature her world.

A ripple on the water holds no secrets for her. She can tell tomorrowโ€™s weather by the wind, and she knows every sound the forest carries.

Every school day begins with the school boat.

Forty minutes later,
she is finally
with her friends.

By the time she’s home,
the river becomes her playground.

She fishes there.
She swims there.

Among piranhas and caimans.

Where does a girl who grows up so far from everything dream of living one day, I wonder.

“Here,” she says. “Just like my mother. And my grandmother.”

By evening,

the first thing she reaches for
is her phone.

Then the kilometres
that so often shape her life
disappear
.

And the whole world
is within reach.
