What would your life look like
if your world slowly grew dark?
Gustavo was fourteen when doctors told him he would slowly lose his sight.
For a long time, he tried to hide it.
“People got upset when I didn’t shake their hand,” he tells me.
“But I simply couldn’t see it.”
He became quieter.
Withdrew from life.
Working became impossible.
Every morning brought the same struggle.
During confession at church, Gustavo admitted for the first time that he was afraid. Slowly, he began to find his way again.
In therapy.
In faith.
In music.
…And in his father’s hardware store.
When I see them together behind the counter, I understand what it means
to need only half a word.
His father notices
when Gustavo misses something.
Almost without him realizing it.
As evening falls, customers turn into an audience.
Because that’s when Gustavo sings sertanejo — Brazilian folk music filled with longing, love, and melancholy.
And there, on stage,
he keeps dreaming
about what may still lie ahead.
His father beside him.
Softly humming along to the music.
As if love sometimes doesn’t need to say much
to mean everything.
