Episode 14: Rose
Sometimes you only realize how important your roots are
when life shakes the tree.
Meeting Rose (35) showed me just how true that can be.
Like so many children growing up in the Pantanal, she left for the city at a young age.
Far from her family.
Not because she wanted to.
But because school ended here.
There, she built a life.
Became a mother.
Until she found herself on her own.
She came back.
Back to the river.
Back to her family.
Back to a place where life certainly wasn’t any easier.
Quite the opposite.
Deep in the wetlands, distances are vast.
And almost everything takes more effort.
She built her own home.
Learned to navigate a boat.
Today, she brings that same determination, together with other parents, to improving education.
As she tells me:
“People can take everything away from you. Except your knowledge.”
A lesson she passes on to her daughter every single day.
The way Rose talks about her daughter is the same way she talks about the landscape that raised her.
A landscape increasingly threatened by drought and fire.
As a volunteer firefighter, she helps protect it.
“Because I want to share the beauty of this place with the whole world.”
